Exploring the Charming Medieval Villages of Drôme
Drôme is full of medieval villages that have preserved evidence of their past. These are places not to be missed, especially since they offer breathtaking landscapes each time. Here are three magnificent villages that La Biscuiterie de Provence highly recommends exploring.
Following the footsteps of knights with the Suze-la-Rousse castle
Suze-la-Rousse is a small village in Drôme that once housed knights. Upon your arrival in the village, you cannot miss this imposing structure: the fortress of Suze-la-Rousse. It is a former and spectacular military construction which, over time, was transformed into a residence in the 16th century. Thus, you will discover a castle rich in character and history. Currently, the site houses the University of Wine, offering various training programs.
The fortress offers a magnificent view of the valley and its beautiful nature.
The Countess de Sévigné and the Grignan castle
The medieval village of Grignan, nestled in the charming region of Drôme, offers a timeless experience. At the heart of this locality stands majestically the castle of Grignan, a building steeped in history associated with the famous Countess of Sévigné. Strolling through the alleys, you will be transported to a bygone era, imbued with medieval charm. The citadel, built in the 11th century, has undergone various architectural evolutions over the ages, reflecting the imprint of different eras.
Beyond its medieval heritage, this perched village of Drôme offers a breathtaking natural backdrop. It offers a spectacular panoramic view of the surrounding hills and lavender fields.
Visiting the castle of Grignan is therefore a must for your stay.
The Adhémar Castle in Montélimar, highlighting French heritage
Montélimar, an emblematic city of Drôme, seduces with its charm combining heritage and the sweetness of life. At the heart of this Provencal city rises the Château des Adhémar, a witness to a past history dating back to the 12th century. Perched on the heights, the castle offers a breathtaking view of the city and the surroundings.
The castle is now owned by the Department of Drôme and stands as an architectural jewel. Its ramparts recount successive eras, oscillating between functions as a residence, fortress, citadel, and even prison. After meticulous restorations, it opened to the public in 1983. Visiting this exceptional site plunges visitors into the medieval world. This exploration is punctuated with games and activities to offer a playful experience for all ages.
